Case Study: Owning the Digital Experience - A Fortune 50 Company's Insourcing Journey
A Fortune 50 Company's Insourcing Journey  As the number one auto insurer, State Farm has an obligation to its millions of policyholders to provide extraordinary customer service across multiple channels. The digital channel has experienced exponential growth in recent years, and State Farm decided it was time to own the digital experience rather than rely on various agencies to create that experience. Since outsourcing digital experience design had been the pattern for years, it was necessary to start from scratch. The digital effort had no resources, no tools, and not even a place to sit. This case study provides an overview of the journey, from what motivated the decision to selection of a location, and the vendor knowledge transfer. The journey taught many lessons about people, space, and operations that others may find useful when beginning a journey of their own.

Object-Oriented UX
Before the web became interactive, information architecture put UX designers on the map. All those "pages" of static content had to be bucketed, filed, and organized. Information Architecture was our main value-add on the web. Then the web started becoming interactive. People were transacting on the web.  Usability, user interfaces, and storyboarding became a new focus. Now projects are not broken down by sections of the IA, they are broken down by task flows (or user stories). But now, in a post-responsive-revolution world, we need to shift our focus again. We need a new paradigm to ensure that we create simple, efficient, and consistent modular systems of dynamic objects.

Content is UX
True Detective was spoiled for me after the finale was inadvertently served in place of the opening episode. Listeners experienced completely different emotions when the lyrics “Would you hold my hand?” were sung in different songs. Context is vital and creating great UX takes context into account. We’ll take a look at what these stories mean to UX and how to use context in a way that creates great experiences for our users.

Goal: We’ll talk about the importance of context in the UX design.

There are three types of context we’ll look at and examine stories from each to see how they affect our users and their experience.
1.  Personal. I’m a diehard Atlanta sports fan and My ESPN profile helps me access information about my favorite teams quickly. However, their homepage also serves up an enormous amount of content, much of it about stories and teams that I don’t follow or care about. We’ll look at the purpose of pages and how we can use them to serve up deeply personal content when it’s possible and relevant to do so.
2.  Placement. How upset would you be if you inadvertently watched the finale of True Detective before you watched any of the other episodes? A UX/UI issue caused that very thing. If Amazon required you to become a member before even letting you look at any products would you be a customer today? Some sites are doing that very thing. We’ll look at these issues of placement both within a page and within a site to discover their pitfalls and easy methods of addressing them.
3. Prose. Platform  9 3/4 presented a conundrum for Harry Potter. He had no idea what would be on the other side and if it was worth him possibly running into a wall. That’s exactly what labels like “See More”, “Click Here”, and “Watch” do to users by providing no information about what they’re diving into. What would you do if a friend handed you a Black Pistol Fire album? What if they then told you that it’s a recommendation based on your Black Keys fandom? Clarity in our labeling can do so much to set up our users expectations and explain the reason for an interface element.

This talk will go through these three types of context, provide stories and examples of each, and provide attendees with solutions on how to solve for these types of context within their UX.

Teach Your Designers Code, Teach Your Coders Design
Design and development are becoming increasingly tight-knit, and turning websites into unique viewing experiences increasingly requires a tighter integration between the design, UX and development team. If designers were more familiar with code, and if developers were more familiar with design, much of the  friction that arises from the knowledge gap can be eliminated. At Nurun we've taken many steps towards  decreasing this knowledge gap and increasing our efficiency, by slowly pushing our deliverables to be code-based and interactive, from style guides to full-fledged interactive prototypes. These deliverables not only help us cut down on deliverable time, but also increase fidelity and clarity, as clients can interact with our  deliverables and get a better sense of the final output earlier in the design process.

As feature articles in both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal over the last month have described, the line between geek/nerd culture and popular culture has almost completely disappeared as our world has become more and more digital. The big ComicCons are no longer niche events for comic book enthusiasts, but mega-celebrations of the popular arts and popular culture. Four Atlanta entrepreneurs very familiar with this cultural intersection share their thoughts on what this digital ascendance means for the business of pop culture, and how Atlanta can play a leading role.

Healthcare & The Reputation Economy
Online reputations matter. According to the most recent study from the Journal of the American Medical Association, 56% of patients consider online reviews to be “important” or “very important” when evaluating a new physician. Terms like “transparency” and “healthcare consumerization” aren’t just buzzwords, but real transformations that are taking place.  Industry-leading healthcare providers have recently begun publishing uncensored doctor ratings and patient comments – from federally-mandated patient satisfaction surveys – on their own website.  Come hear how some of the country’s largest hospital systems are embracing this trend to take control of their doctors’ online reputation and make doctor selection more transparent.

Create, Measure & Adapt : Marketing in the Age of Analytics
This session will cover how to make sure you measure everything you do in your marketing efforts. But we'll start by making you think about what to measure. Because the number of followers might not we a good measure while the number of phone calls received might be. (And yes you can measure those) Every aspect of your marketing plan should have a measurable goal for success. While executing you need to "track and adapt". Online marketing is great because there is so much to measure - but only when you measure metrics that drive company results does it matter. We will cover practical examples of measuring LinkedIn, Blog, Website, Twitter and Email effectiveness - and the audience is encouraged to submit examples for discussion as well.

How to Shine in a Crowded Market combined with Product Pricing and Differentiation Workshop
If your business is in a crowded industry like Digital Marketing, market differentiation becomes increasingly important for the survival of your company. So what can you do to make your business stand out? Here are a few simple yet important things I have learned (I will further expand on these points with specific examples in my presentation):
1. Sell something that actually has value. As simple as this may sound, you must make sure people are willing to pay for what you’re offering.
2. Stay focused on your strength. Search has always been Cardinal’s strength. Yes, we do provide supporting services but search is our core competency. It’s how we get customers in the door- once they start with SEO, we can upsell them to Paid Search, Social Media, Web Design, and/or Rep Management. 3. Determine your Unique Selling Proposition. This is what makes you different than the rest of your competitors. Remember: don’t sell what you do, sell why you do it.
4. Talk to your customers. They’re your best source of market intelligence because they’re the ones using your services or your product.
5. Understand that your customers are your best marketing tool.  Word of mouth is still the most effective form of marketing. When your customers are happy, they’ll speak for you and become ambassadors for your brand.
6. Be extremely passionate about your company. As a business owner, you have to share your passion for your company with everyone you know. Your employees look at you as an example, if you’re not passion about what they’re working for, they won’t be either!
7. Don’t make promises you can’t keep. You must have the capacity to deliver on your promises because it won’t take long for your customers to realize you can’t handle the work you promised. Plus, an unhappy ex client won’t stay quiet.
8. Hire the best. Success comes down to execution. You need intelligent and hard-working individuals working to create and sustain your company as it grows.

The Why, The What, The How of Word of Mouth Marketing
We opened Fizz 12 years ago. Since then we have become the go-to agency for word of mouth.  While everyone ‘does’ word of mouth by sharing stories with friends and family, word of mouth marketing is a
powerful marketing tool that exposes targeted consumers to a conversation, gets them to internalize that conversation and then share it with their friends as their own. Those conversations automatically create a call to action and personalize the message on an individual basis.   Conversation naturally occurs. Word of Mouth Marketing occurs when customers become advocates of your brand and share their stories. When your story is authentic, relevant and interesting, Influencers will share it. Recommendations from a friend or trusted acquaintance are significantly more effective in getting consumers to purchase. When your story is authentic, relevant and interesting, Influencers will share it. According to a Keller Fay Group study in 2009, 76% of all Americans talk about at least one brand a day, and an average of ten. They also found that people have 112 marketing relevant conversations are  happening per week per person and Influencers have two times as many brand conversations per week.  It’s all about creating great stories that people will share over an extended period of time. Through word of mouth marketing programs, brand story sharing in new or existing groups are encouraged or accelerated. In order to implement a successful program, Fizz has developed a replicable process to define the ‘talkable’ story, seed that story within the target audience through face-to-face conversations and digital media, stoke influencers so they continue to share it and then measure the results.

What's Your Story: How Brands Can Use Storytelling to Build Digital Engagement…
Did you know...   Havas Media Group published a jaw dropping study last year, revealing that
“meaningful brands” outperform the stock market in excess of 120%. Brands that focus on emotional resonance, impactful visual and content-focused storytelling, as well as lasting community influence, are building brand equity and loyalty by rocking an ethos, no doubt shared by the brand’s own audience.
According to the Meaningful Brand Index (MBi), the higher the brand connects to the personal and collective well-being of its customers, the stronger brand equity it has, and the more attachment its audience has toward it.  What does this mean for the future of marketing? Be driven by purpose - and design accordingly - or die.  When brands match powerful brand purposes to powerful design-centric processes, they create value. Value for customers. Value for users. Value for stakeholders. Value for leadership, and by association, value for team members. Meaning and design go hand-in-hand for brands that are set on reaching multiple, yet shared, world views. Meaning drives design decisions. Design
decisions are influenced by meaning. With meaning, comes the opportunity for bolder marketing and brand value that actually delivers a very solid *something*.  In this session, we'll discover HOW to discover your brand's meaning and mission, WHY you need a purpose-driven positioning statement that ignites design decisions, WHEN to include your design team on critical branding moves, and WHERE to market your brand so that your purpose and branding are catalyzed by communities who believe in your vision. We'll discuss WHO in the industry is moving toward B-Certification (http://www.bcorporation.net), WHEN it matters, and explore case studies of successful (and not-so-successful) brands who flourished with a big idea.

Using the Buyer Journey to Create Successful Digital Marketing Campaigns

When’s the last time you bought something after searching for only one keyword or seeing one display ad? As buyers become more sophisticated, our marketing campaigns must be designed to provide value throughout the entire buyer journey. Digital marketing is not just about selling product or driving leads; it’s about solving problems. It’s about respecting your audience and crafting a strategy that provides them with valuable information throughout their entire journey.  Approaching digital marketing as a way to further establish your brand online and build a loyal tribe can be powerful. In this formal presentation, I’ll discuss how to use a human-centered approach to craft successful marketing campaigns.
Key takeaways include:
- How to determine your brand story and leverage your messaging in your campaigns.
- Focus on users first. Use qualitative and quantitative data to figure out how they make purchasing
decisions and determine what resources you can provide to propel them along their decision cycle. It’s about providing the right content at the right time.
- Approach your campaigns with the goal to solve problems, not sell.
- Build your campaigns to maximize reach; use SEO, PPC, content, digital PR, social media and retargeting not only to reach users from the awareness to consideration to purchase stages, but also to build ongoing consumer loyalty.
- Use multi-channel analytics data to find human patterns, better understand the complex buyer journey and optimize for your audience.

Managing the Digital Chatter - Panel
The reality in digital is that while you are using the space to share information about your brand, your consumers are doing the same thing. Through social media, blogging and similar outlets consumers are creating a digital chatter about your brand, and unless you are engaged in that conversation, it is often one-sided. Professionals in social media, reputation management, SEO and content marketing will shed light into when it is important to join that conversation, the best way to say "hello" and how to ensure that even negative customer experiences don't bring down your digital reputation.

The Evolution of the Financial Services Consumer Journey
Mobile isn't the future. It's the present. The proliferation of "smart" mobile devices has created a new breed of financial services customer - namely, one who expects information in "the now". Brands need to meet consumers on this new level of expectation, resistance will only prove futile. As users move seamlessly between devices, brands need to develop a "device-agnostic" marketing strategy to engage customers and exceed expectations. Paypal and Venmo are gobbling up a huge share of transactions that historically were banks bread and butter. With new competitors specifically focused on online banking and near perfect access to information everywhere and at anytime, do brands still matter to the 2014 banking customer? The answer is yes.

Start to Launch: Minimizing Risk and Creating Your First Mobile App

No overhead costs, no need to hire a ton of employees, and there’s quick ways to create a mobile app in seconds through 3rd party software.  Mobile app startups are the most popular avenue for new entrepreneurs.  However, it’s easy to overlook the process of making a quality app.  Before you realize it, you’re knee deep in an untested app that has too many features, confuses your customers, and actually ends up costing more than initially expected.

My presentation will show you how to avoid the biggest mistakes a business can make when creating a new mobile app.

Mobile SEO - Creating Accessible & Optimized Mobile Experiences
This year, mobile search queries will exceed desktop queries on Google. Yet, in a world where mobile devices outnumber computers 3-to-1, many businesses still treat mobile as a separate experience and runner-up to their "main" site.  This session will focus on case studies and real-world examples how search engines interpret and rank mobile websites.  We will explore the variety of options for creating mobile website experiences, weigh the pros and cons of each, and address areas that businesses can optimize their sites to  increase traffic and revenue from mobile devices.  Participants will have the opportunity to submit their site for live review and will be engaged in discussion about mobile SEO strategy and technical implementation so they can leave with increased knowledge of the mobile landscape and practical understanding of the steps they can take to take their own mobile presence to the next level.
